It's not uncommon at all. Your other drives are most likely to fail during a rebuild due to the added stress of continual access during this process.
That's what makes something like RAID 5 on spinning rust so scary.

If all of the drives in the array are of similar age and from the same batch, I'd plan on swapping them all within the next while as each successive rebuild takes its toll on the remaining drives.

Agreed - and double check those backups.

I have doubled and tripled checked. Did a couple restores today with single files and also entire VM's. (Currently using Veeam)

What did he mean when he said there's only a limited number or writes on a USB flash drive.

So this is a small mistake on the A+ material. They are making assumptions about the storage media based on the communications protocol. But it's based on very common things. A standard USB flash drive using a flash memory technology that "wears out" as you write to it, but essentially never wears out as you read it.

So the way that a USB stick is "meant to be used" is that you store things on it and read it a lot. You can change it, but it isn't meant for constant writes.

So under "normal" use, USB sticks last a long time. But it you write to it constantly (like when using it as swap) you will cause the memory chip(s) to die quickly.

Yeah after my limited experience with this, not sure I would ever trust using a non-DELL drive.

At least on a production system.

The most common RAIN approach that I see is taking all disks in the pool, noting their nodal presence and using mirroring to distribute the data so that data mirrors never go to the same disk and/or the same node. So a little like a networked RAID 1E but with more flexibility and the option to add nodal separation and performance testing so that data moves to where it is used.

Are you aware of any open source RAIN systems?

      Gluster and Swift

I think Ceph and Lustre may be two others.

Lustre is RAIN, but is closed. Gluster was the open replacement for Lustre.

Just a quick search showed that Lustre was GPL 2.0, not sure if that is new or not.

Oh wow, must be new. It was crazy expensive in 2006 when we were really investigating it. That's awesome.

Ah looks like it went open source in 2010.

Oh cool, so I remember things well then. I'm just out of date. Gluster probably forced their hand, why would anyone consider Lustre when it was closed source? The answer was probably... they wouldn't and didn't.

Yep, I'd assume that was the case. Especially when it is a such a specific, and at the time, niche market.

And when Gluster went directly after them, even in name.

Intel has started calling Blind Swap - "Surprise Hot Plug".

Because you're surprised when you blindly swap the right drives?

The system is surprised, to say the least.

      Also: Holy Necropost, Batman!

      Ha, but with new updates.
